She appeared on FX criminal comedy Fargo's initial season. Inspired by the 1996 Coen brothers film of the same name, Fargo starred veteran actors Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman as well as Bob Odenkirk. Tolman received praise for her performance as Minnesota police officer Molly Solverson, with Vanity Fair noting her that she "calmly and assuredly stole the entire film". Critics' Choice Television Award, Best Supporting Actress (Movie/Miniseries) and Golden Globe nominated were given to Tolman for her performance. In the in the same season, the news revealed that Tolman would have a two-episode guest role on The Mindy Project, playing Abby Berman, a romance writer.
